If You Damaged Another Car Would You Stop Or Drive On?

OK, so you have been on your shopping expedition and you have picked up some good bargains. You return to the car park and bang your mood suddenly changes. Someone has dented your car. Is there anything more infuriating? Most of us have experienced this scenario, especially when we were just learner drivers. The question is though, would you own up to this accident and leave your details behind or would you make a quick getaway? A new survey indicates that as many as 1 in five people would not own up to damaging a parked car.

If you are the owner of an expensive top of the range car then you have even more to worry about. Another survey by a UK car insurance company found that 20% of over 3000 motorists surveyed, would only come clean about hitting another car depending on the type of car hit. If you have an old cheap car then they will be more likely to own up. If your are the proud owner of a VW Golf GTi then only 1% of drivers will would own up to hitting your car!

Of those who were surveyed, almost half had had their own parked car damaged, and only 15 percent of those were left details by the culprit. Two thirds said they wouldn’t leave their details if they couldn’t see any visible damage on the car they hit – probably by persuading themselves that bang they heard was nothing after all!

You may ask is there a significant difference between men and women. Who is the more honest? 61% of women would leave their details and only 56% of men would leave their details. I guess women are the more honest of the species, but it is a pity that such a high percentage of people walk away in the first place. It is a terrible thing to happen to you.

Moving away from men / women comparisons, we get to young / old comparisons. Who do you think are the most honest? Not surprisingly the worst culprits are new drivers. 25% of them would not even own up to damaging a friend’s car. 94% of over 55 drivers would own up to damaging cars as they have experienced this in the past.
